Years ago a film producer at the Tribeca Film Center hired me to write a screenplay based on "The Two Lives of Robert Ledru", a book he loved. He wanted me to add some elements of the French Panama Canal Scandal, in which Ledru was not historically involved, but he had read "Path Between the Seas" and was fascinated with the story. So I wrote this screenplay, got paid very little, and we waited for a studio to fund the project.

At one point he was negotiating with the French Film Industry, which is government supported, and they were tossing around names like Dustin Hoffman and DeNiro for the part of Ledru (this was in the mid-80s). They finally settled on this French actor who, at the time, was engaged to Princess Caroline of Monaco. Since he was about to marry into her family, they had to "approve" his acting projects. So my script was sent overseas to be approved by the Royal Family of Monaco, which was strange,

Anyway, after years of negotiating and re-writes (with other writers getting involved, including Tom Stoppard, whom I never met, but somewhere out there there's a script with my name and his name on the title page) the poject just fizzled out and I lost contact with the Producer.

I did, however, put the screenplay on my resume as a spec script. My resume is on line. The producers of the Learning Channel show were Googling for info about Robert Ledru when they find my web site, saw the screenplay I'd written, and gave me a call. I said, "Sure, I'll be an expert for you!". I had to re-read the screenplay and the book to remind myself of all the particualrs (it had been a while), but by the time we shot the segment I was well prepared.

I'd love to see the film made one day. I thought it was a pretty good script.
