Ok,

So I finally got around to making the forums look like the new website a bit more. And had a little fun with all the ways I can customize the new forum software. Yes, it took me THIS long to get my brain back enough to actually consider messing around with all the funky CSS stuff in the back end of the forum system.

There are still some issues that I want to polish out, but... it is getting close...

Dennis Markuze is a mentally unstable individual who's been harassing this board for several years on a semi-regular basis (when he's off his meds?). He's been uncivil, uncommunicative aside from always ranting about winning Randi's Million Dollar Challenge but being cheated on the reward (total fabrication), Nostradamus, and most recently how atheists will get their holy comeuppance. He has failed to comply to moderator and admin instructions, and he has made threats to both this board in general, and personal threats. That's why we don't want him here.
If he posts here again, please do not reply to it, but use the report post function or simply ignore the post. With traffic as low as it is now, I monitor all posts on an almost daily basis and clean him out whenever I see his drek.
In a word: terrifying. Since the 1980's fundamentalists have been doing their best to turn the US military into a "publicly funded missionary organisation".

Apart from helping fuel the whole Islam vs Christianity thing, it turns out many soldiers - both religious and atheist - are appalled by these developments. As one would expect, the fundamentalists have very clear idea's about what constitutes the "right kind of religion". The part about the soldiers painting the above slogan onto their Bradly fighting vehicle and rolling tino a muslim town was schocking and stupid.

Avatar

I recently saw it again, and it's better than I initially thought. The writing is not only solid, but it's exceptional, especially when considering what Joseph Campbell had to say about modern myths (I implore everyone to check out The Power of Myth). Lucas really dropped the ball with the Star Wars prequels, but James Cameron has picked that ball up and knocked it out of the park. Cameron is clearly the better student of the master.

I hear people talk about how the effects carry the film, but it's the story that's turning this film into such a huge hit. It's going to cross 1 billion in ticket sales worldwide in a matter of days (on its way to surely beating Titanic's record). After a screening of the film, my mother-in-law even asked "so where were the effects?" She thought it was all real! Being someone who has worked extensively in 3D animation, I was absolutely stunned to see what they were able to pull off in this film, but I also realize that most people don't quite notice it, since they are being taken in with the events of the story. The real magic isn't in the effects or the technology, but in the emotional catharsis being provided by the familiar, well-told tale. And the (insane amount of) technology is really working to service the story without overshadowing it.

Anyway, I highly recommend everyone go see this film while in theaters. You're really missing out if you skip this major event.

Chilean Taxi Scam

So on my recent trip to Santiago I was twice victim of a scam that is old trick but I am not sure (without avoiding Taxi's at night) one can avoid.

To be honest, my general humanism and circumstances caused the first scam to go unnoticed until I notice the same scam the next day. Also it is in part possible due to the ridiculous small value of the Chilean peso (1000=US$1.80), so many transactions are in the tens of thousands denomination, and notes start in the thousands (whats one more zero more or less).

The scam only happens if the bill is over 10,000 (common with the extra night fees) and it is that the driver pulls up on a dark side street next to the hotel instead of in the well lit and attended hotel drive (these are city hotels). If asked about this he makes a spinglish excuse "ploicia" and shrugs off the question. He then takes the money handed (say two 10,000 notes, and using card slight-of-hand turns them into thousand notes and says you have given him the wrong denomination (all in pigeon). So he gives you the two thousand notes and asks you again for ten thousand notes, thus often nearly doubling his fare.

As I said the first time I hardly noticed and assumed my own mistake, though I am a well seasoned traveler and this was the first time in 20 years of ravel, and well over a dozen currencies that I have made such a mistake, and I am usually pretty keen on such things and local currency and exchange rates. Cest La vie. The next time it happened I had just replenished my wad from a bank and so knew exactly how much cash I had in hand. This is where the darkened side street and lack of english help the driver. He insisted and appeared angry, I was far enough away from the safety of the hotel to be concerned about a violent reaction so in the end, though knowing I was scammed, I paid again.

Should I have argued more, shouted help, ran into the hotel hoping for aid, or was the loss of 30 US a small price? What would you have done?

Astrology Is A Pure Math_ But Do You Have An Unbiased Attitude ?

Hi,
This is my first post to this forum.

My point of opening this new topic is not proving astrology here.
but I am asking you to have an open mind, unbiased attitude for a while.

To keep unbiased attitude is difficult but possible. It is my request to read with an open mind. a neutral mind is a Scientist mind.

Kindly read with such an attitude and reply with such attitude. and I promise you that I will also read your post with similar attitude.
I believe it is a path of Scientific attitude.

-----------

This topic is not written with an attitude to prove Astrology. but to show you Astrology is a pure Math.

First let me define Astrology in a few words. - Everybody is born on particular planetary positions( Astronomical positions). with that position Astrologer can predict the personality( preferences or preferred choice or habits of that human being).
and when time passes that human being grow older. Astrologer try to find out WHEN it is not suitable time IN RESPECT TO THE POSITION WHEN that human being was born. this RELATION between any TWO POSITIONS ( Future position and the position when he/she was born) is Astrologer's business.

you can see here it is pure math. between Two ASTRONOMICAL POSITIONS.

Let me explain you more familiar or simpler terms.
you know we have seasons. Winter, Summer etc.
I live in INDIA, and If I am " UNCOMFORTABLE" ( it is my preference, not necessarily yours) with Winter or cold then it is more difficult for me to travel Europe in Winter because of extreme cold weather. but may be it is "EASIER" for me to travel in Africa in the similar months. So I have co-related between TWO POSITIONS and you can predict the outcome.

Similarly, If Astrologer Knows the personality of particular human being and list his different preferences and then with pure math Astrologer can "travel" in to the future and finds out favorable and unfavorable planetary positions IN RESPECT TO THE PREFERENCES of that particular Human being( or that planetary position when he/she was born)

Suppose someone has a preference of TYPE A behavior( it is a medical term)
in brief Type A behavior = A form of behavior exhibited by people who tend to be aggressive, competitive, tense, time-conscious, and generally hostile. Because of competitiveness and time-conscious sometimes impatient also. It is very easy to say if you or time or circumstances restrict these type of people then they may become upset, angry. Am I right ? So If Astrologer find out such behavior in his birth Planetary position then Astrologer will look to those future planatory positions when these forces combines or multiplies which increases restriction eventually leads to anger, forcefulness and other outcome of anger. Astrology or Astrologer's word is NOT FINAL. If He/She learnt the lesson from family upbringing or religious teachings or by experience to control anger or understand the situation then he/she can FEEL restriction but resolves the situation and AVOIDE THE NAGATIVE EFFECT OF THE SITUATION AND EARN THE BENIFIT. similarly if I live in India and I am "UNCOMFORTABLE" with cold and if I travel EUROPE in winter BUT If I wear proper Cloths which can protect me from cold I can live with it with some restriction and travel Europe in winter and earn the benefits.

above paragraph also means that Astrologer should and can only predict the circumstances, not EXACT events and with an appropriate attitude of that particular situation you can change DESTINY. most of the time with common sense you can do it without Astrology. with astrology you have math on your side.

I have tried best to explain you in above paragraphs in words ( without Math).

I think let me stop here and understand what your opinion of it and then I will explain appropriate math example.

Thanks for reading it.

This week on Skepticality, Swoopy talks with a true skeptical original: Skeptics Society co-founder Pat Linse, co-publisher and Art Director of Skeptic magazine. She is among skepticism's most influential pioneers â and yet, she has rarely stepped into the public spotlight.

Among Pat's many groundbreaking innovations was the creation of Junior Skeptic (the 10-page kids' critical thinking insert bound within Skeptic magazine). Joining Pat in this interview is current Junior Skeptic editor and illustrator Daniel Loxton, here to talk about their latest creation: a full-color children's book released this week by Kids Can Press, entitled "Evolution: How We and All Living Things Came to Be".

"The Universe does not bend itself to our ignorance." ÂThis simple truism is just one of the many observations made by author, skeptic and former president of the National Center for Science Education Robert J. Schadewald, who died of cancer on March 12th, 2000.

This week on Skepticality, Swoopy talks with his sister Lois Schadewald, who compiled and published a humorous, insightful volume of her brother's articles, essays and interviews in 2008.

Entitled Worlds of Their Own: A Brief History of Misguided Ideas; Creationism, Flat-Earthism, Energy Scams, and the Velikovsky Affair, Robert Schadewald's work reminds us that in order to understand the difference between science and pseudoscience we must investigate the unique claims and personalities of some of history's most unorthodox thinkers. Only then can we begin to learn what leads some people to embrace critical thinking and science â and others cling to their own realities despite all the evidence in the universeâ.

View the full article

Catching Fire, How Cooking Made Us Human

I may be biased on at least two accounts, but Catching Fire, How Cooking Made Us Human by Richard Wrangham is an astonishingly well done piece of work. I say two counts of bias because not only am I a lover of every single scrap of food and cooking lore or fact, I can devour; but also because until I read this Harvard biological anthropologists work, I had assumed his thesis as a given. That is that pore humans evolved cooking before, or at least concurrent with growing their extra large brains. I am still surprised that it was ever disputed, but I think this excellent presentation of all the facts makes it the strongest most likely answer by far.

Wrangham book is both brilliant and accessible, weaving together primate studies, forensic anthropology, nutritional science and primatology, he posits that bout 1.87 million years ago our ancestors tamed fire, began cooking, and then these memes forced the evolutionary changes that make us human (small gut, small jaw, large brain, hairless, ground dwelling primates). He doesn't stop there though, he then goes on to provide ample evidence along with additional notes on the cultural changes (pair bonding, division of labor by sex, etiquette, and free time) that are prevalent today because we are able to cook (thus hyper energize and have these luxuries) our food source.

It also is an excellent, perfectly logical, factual debunking of the "a calorie is a calorie" notion.
I work as an actuary and have recently been hearing a lot of talk about global warming as it pertains to catastrophe losses for insurance companies. Most of the ways to reduce property losses are expensive and require much discipline from the insureds. In other words, they're a waste of time. I have been hearing a lot about geoengineering solutions for reducing hurricane strength, global warming, etc. Many of these ideas seem very efficient, although very outside the box. It seems that the man behind many of the ideas is Nathan Myhrvold. I've read about him in Superfreakonomics as well as seen him on CNN. Is there any way you could snag an interview with him? This whole climate change debate has kooks on both sides, and it was very refreshing to hear a guy who is a climate change believer, yet is realistic enough to see that reducing carbon emissions will not solve all the problem by itself.

Thanks!

Here is my reply,,,,,

Your are confused Felix. It's not atheism's death that you should have reported on Dec. 15, 09. Atheism is very much alive and spreading, as humans around the globe intellectually advance away from ignorance and superstition. If you weren't so delusional about atheism dying you could see that. It's was the lying atheist Oral Roberts that died Dec. 15 (alleluia) , just in time for festivas too. Oral an atheist? Yes. His actions over his whole career showed that he no more believe in a God than Jref's Randy or Penn and teller. His true belief that there is no God allowed him to, without fear of judgment after death and lack of moral compass to sleep with a clear conscious. Yes my bad, a person without a moral cell in is body. He was one example of the worst kind of human vermin evolution can produce. The kind of dirt bag that had no limits to which he would go to get money. Given his lack of moral compass he choose a career which best suited his greed, Evangelism. There is nothing, no lie to extreme they can or will say when it comes to getting mentally handicapped people to send and give them money. So despicable was his ways, he rose to highest levels of the American Evangelist pyramid. A spiritual "Bernie Madoff" who played the Religious Punzi scheme, on 10's of millions of fools. All to sadly on his passing, there was no vacuum created by his passing because there is no lack of human jackals (Evangelists) tripping over themselves to get control of his zombies. SS

The Science Of Fear

The Science of Fear: Why We Fear the Things We Shouldn't--and Put Ourselves in Greater Danger by Daniel Gardner http://www.amazon.com/Science-Fear-Shouldnt-Ourselves-Greater/dp/0525950621

Is an excellent read well worth the price of copy and time invested. My one critique is that it is marginally misnamed. Gardner starts out clearly focusing on fear and bad decisions with a discussion of the 2000 largely unknown victims of 9-11 terror, those who chose to drive instead of fly in the year after the event, who met their death on the far more dangerous roads. And how society and our poor reasoning systems lead us to such disastrous ends. However in Gardner's romp through the science of decision making he expounds largely on fear and decision making but also deeply critical thinking, reason and skepticism versus sensationalism, anecdote and feeling. Because of that detailed and enlightened discussion I think this book ought be as much a must read for skeptics as any Dawkin's work. Give it a try.

5 Reasons Space Aliens Might Visit Earth

In no particular order here are 5 reasons space aliens might visit Earth.

1. Research. If you wish to study a culture that is more primitive than yours the last thing you want to do is make your presents known as this will contaminate your results. It's easy even with our own technology to effectively hide large aircraft and even ships. Current military research is ongoing to develop a cloaking devise that could make seeing anything, from large ships to solders very hard to spot visually. Some rumors have stated they are very close to doing this. Just a bit scary if you ask me. Surly a technology that allows travle between the stars will be advanced enough to hide themselves. If they are heere they would be completely unknown.

2. Concurring. It's possible to have space aliens interested in conquest. If this is the case there is no point in hiding. You simply show up and take over. Throughout the history of the expansion of the Roman Empire (or any empire for that matter) not one did they try to hide from the concurred peoples. If the aliens were here to concur their presents would be obvious.

3. Harvesting natural resources. It makes little sense to go to a planet with advanced life on it to get natural resources. We have seen that most of the objects in our solar system are rich in all the things we need to function, hydrocarbons, metals, water, even organics, from which food can be made. It would be very impracticable to come to a planet with advanced life on it for this reason.

4. To help. Why is it that in science fiction the aliens who don't want to eat us always tell us we "have great potential". That's about as obvious as a blow to the head with a 10 pound sledge hammer. They never tell us how screwed up we are. If I were to discover a an intelligent species on the verge of destroying themselves, considering if intelligent races are rare I'd want to make an effort to save them. In this case it would be counter productive to hide. First you'd want to force the worlds military to stand down. In Children of the Gods by Arther C. Clarke written in the 1950's, long before Independents Day, the aliens showed up in city sized ships and hovered over battlefields. When an army tried to attack anyway they were destroyed. It's possible there are entire federations of star systems out there. I would simply invite them to join us.

5. They are teasing us. It's possible that what farmers and others see as UFO's of adolescent aliens who are engaging in the interstellar equivalent of cow tipping. Maybe they fly down and pick up some person, maybe even sexually molest them, then leave them with no evidence. Surly there would be laws agenst such behavior, but how many teenagers break the law while hiving fun.

Something to keep in mind here. Our solar system is one of BILLIONS in the galaxy. Unless you are within about 60 or so light years there is absolutly nothing special about our local star. What are the chances that aliens would even know we are here?

Water bottles, hand sanitizer, anti-bacterial soap, vitamin supplements, broad spectrum antibiotics - ancient man had none of these things, and yet in harsh conditions he not only survived, but thrived.
Biofuel Anyone?

The DOE has funded some crazy projects so I'm almost inclined to believe this article is true. Please tell me it isn't. I thought some skeptical thinkers ought to consider this.

Article:

Biodiesel Magazine

Missouri tapping coal mines for ‘slime power’

Washington University’s Photosynthetic Research Center in St. Louis and the Advanced Biofuels Systems at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center recently received $35 million from the U.S. DOE to fund research related to the oil producing characteristics of algae.

Officials in the state said Missouri’s access to abundant water, flat land and fertilizer could make the state a hub for algae-to-fuel production. Also, Missouri has coal mines. With their constant temperature and controlled lighting, underground coal mines serve as ideal incubators. David Summers, professor of Mining Engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology, said that mines also potentially provide an infrastructure for algae cultivation that does not have to be built—the ponds, reactors and other paraphernalia usually associated with algae production. “You can isolate the algae from the sun in a mine,” Summers said. “We have stable temperatures and underground ambient conditions, plus modulated light—this means better control.”

http://www.biodieselmagazine.com/article.jsp?article_id=3858

From me:

Is is yet another brilliant but expensive parody from the DOE? Yes, mines have a constant temperature, about 50 °C, just the temperature where plants and microorganisms stop growing. And one other thing lacking.... hmmm, what is it you need to grow algae?... water, warmth, ... oh yeah sunlight -- the source of energy! I suppose we could just put heaters in those mines and artificial lighting! Then convert that energy to a biofuel! The first law of thermodynamics only applies to energy that isn't subsidized by the government. Just for the record, I recognized this is a joke right? Please tell me it is a joke. Just like that grant program to genetically engineer microbes to produce hydrogen from biomass (like the ones that have existed since the beginning of life). This was a big improvement over the idea of producing energy by converting water into hydrogen.

BEIJING — Followers of an unapproved church in Beijing were again forced by the government to find a new place to worship Sunday, a move one analyst suggested would be a test for President Barack Obama on religious freedom during his first visit to the country.

Worship in China, governed by the officially atheist Communist Party, is allowed only in state-approved churches, but millions of people belong to unregistered churches that often face official harassment.

Sunday's banishment was the latest for the Shouwang church, one of the largest underground churches in China with about 800 members. It was forced to hold services in a park earlier this month after being kicked out of a rented indoor area. Photos and a video posted on the church's Web site, which was later blocked, showed hundreds of members gathered, holding snow-flecked umbrellas and Bibles.

On Sunday, police blocked church members again from meeting at the park, and hundreds ended up at a performance hall elsewhere in the city.

District police referred questions to the Beijing public security bureau, where calls rang unanswered Sunday. Calls to the State Religious Affairs Bureau also went unanswered.

Another well-known underground church in Shanghai, Wanbang, also has been told to close.

Harassing the two prominent unregistered churches is likely to intimidate other smaller churches. Members of the Beijing church said Sunday they have never experienced such harassment from authorities before.

Obama, who was to arrive in Shanghai later Sunday, will be closely watched during his visit for signs he will speak out on human rights, including religious freedom. Leaders of churches like Shouwang said if Obama doesn't speak up, the Chinese government will crack down even more.

"Sometimes before a major U.S. visit, Chinese authorities show goodwill and release someone. But this time, it's the opposite," said Yang Fenggang, director of the Center on Religion and Chinese Society at Purdue University. "I tend to think this is a test case."

Activists and others in China say the U.S. may not want to risk angering China when it needs cooperation on issues such as climate change and the financial crisis.

"I think so far President Obama has been the worst president in terms of dealing with China's human rights issue," said Fan Yafeng, an outspoken leader of another unregistered, or "house," church in Beijing.

He said the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences fired him Nov. 3 as a research fellow at its Institute of Legal Studies for political reasons, including his church activities.

"Human rights lawyers and house churches are two of the most important powers in China's civil society, but the president hasn't made any gesture to help them," Fan said.

Obama touched briefly on human rights and China in a major Asia policy speech in Japan on Saturday, but he did not mention specific issues.

The Obama administration's stance has worried many since February, when Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said the U.S. would not let human rights concerns interfere with cooperation with Beijing on global crises.

"The Obama administration's total silence on this issue was seen as a green light and certainly emboldens the Chinese government's resolve to carry out this sweep without worrying about international consequences," Bob Fu, founder of the U.S.-based Christian group China Aid Association, said in an e-mail Saturday.

Hackers Steal Electronic Data From Top Climate Research Center

First the juicy bit:

Quote

"I've just completed Mike's Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years (i.e., from 1981 onwards) and from 1961 for Keith's to hide the decline."

Then the context, for those who care:

Quote

Hackers broke into the electronic files of one of the world's foremost climate research centers this week and posted an array of e-mails in which prominent scientists engaged in a blunt discussion of global warming research and disparaged climate-change skeptics.

The skeptics have seized upon e-mails stolen from the Climatic Research Unit of the University of East Anglia in Britain as evidence that scientific data have been rigged to make it appear as if humans are causing global warming. The researchers, however, say the e-mails have been taken out of context and merely reflect an honest exchange of ideas.

University officials confirmed the data breach, which involves more than 1,000 e-mails and 3,000 documents, but said they could not say how many of the stolen items were authentic.

"We are aware that information from a server in one area of the university has been made available on public websites," the statement says. "We are extremely concerned that personal information about individuals may have been compromised. Because of the volume of this information we cannot currently confirm what proportion of this material is genuine."

Michael E. Mann, who directs the Earth System Science Center at Pennsylvania State University, said in a telephone interview from Paris that skeptics are "taking these words totally out of context to make something trivial appear nefarious."

In one e-mail from 1999, the center's director, Phil Jones, alludes to one of Mann's articles in the journal Nature and writes, "I've just completed Mike's Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years (i.e., from 1981 onwards) and from 1961 for Keith's to hide the decline."

Mann said the "trick" Jones referred to was placing a chart of proxy temperature records, which ended in 1980, next to a line showing the temperature record collected by instruments from that time onward. "It's hardly anything you would call a trick," Mann said, adding that both charts were differentiated and clearly marked.

But Myron Ebell, director of energy and global warming policy for the Competitive Enterprise Institute, said this and other exchanges show researchers have colluded to establish the scientific consensus that humans are causing climate change.

"It is clear that some of the 'world's leading climate scientists,' as they are always described, are more dedicated to promoting the alarmist political agenda than in scientific research," said Ebell, whose group is funded in part by energy companies. "Some of the e-mails that I have read are blatant displays of personal pettiness, unethical conniving, and twisting the science to support their political position."

In one e-mail, Ben Santer, a scientist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, offered to beat up skeptic Pat Michaels, a senior fellow at the libertarian Cato Institute, out of sympathy for Jones.

Neither Jones nor Santer could be reached for comment.

The Greatest Show On Earth

Just read The Greatest Show on Earth, Dawkins' new book.

Interesting read, but if you've read any other Dawkins on Evolution book, this is more of an update/Expansion.

To repeat, well worth the time I gave it.

From Wikipedia:

The book was released to a positive critical reception. Writing in The Times, Anjana Ahuja described Dawkins' account of the evidence for evolution as "fine, lucid and convincing". Though she criticized him for aggrandizing the role of Islam in the spread of creationism and suggested that his writing style is unlikely to persuade disbelievers, Ahuja described these as merely "quibbles" and recommended the book to all readers.[19] The Economist also featured a favourable review, praising Dawkins' writing style as "persuasive" and lauding its educational value.[20] Mark Fisher in The List called Dawkins a "compelling communicator", adding that the book was "illuminating" and praising the use of humorous anecdotes throughout.[21] The Sunday Telegraph awarded it "Book of the Week", with reviewer Simon Ings describing Dawkins as a "master of scientific clarity and wit". Although Ings felt that anger had interfered with Dawkins' creativity to an extent, he also praised sections of the book as "magical" and "visceral", concluding that there was a "timeless merit" to the overall theme.[22] [23] [24] [25] [26]

The New York Times reviewer, Nicholas Wade, while praising the work overall, does not approve of Dawkins' assertion that evolution can be referred to as fact and opines that Dawkins' harsh treatment of the "history-deniers" borders on incivility.[27]. Wade's review has subsequently been criticized. [28]

Save Podcasting!

Hi guys, haven't posted in a while, I know, but I felt this was important.
Volomedia has just patented the entire idea of a podcast. "episodic media". Note that I did not say "patenting". I said "patented", past tense. This is recent, and if left to stand has serious implications for anyone who wants to podcast anything without paying some sort of license for the technology. The Electronic Frontier Foundation is going to fight it.

It's extremely important for podcasts like this one and others that run on fairly limited budgets that this not be allowed to stand. Now the first of the Skepticality podcasts don't qualify to help by demonstrating what the EFF calls "prior art" before November.19, 2003 Basically anything describing the idea of the "podcast" or episodic electronic media that allows people to subscribe. I don't know if Derek and Swoopy ever put anything down in writing before this, but they likely have more connections to old-school podcasters than I do. Other people here also likely listen to older podcasts and might write to them alerting them of the situation and allow them to help the EFF fight this, since they are going to need the podcasters' help to get through this.

The EFF Link: http://www.eff.org/d...-and-we-need-yo

Detailed Legaltastic* Description of "Prior Art"[PDF]: http://w2.eff.org/pa...a_prior_art.pdf

I put this in politics and current affairs, because while not one of the more pressing issues of our time, it's certainly related to the way things are done. Hope no one minds.

*Yes that's "legaltastic" and not a typo of "legalistic".

In the spring/summer of 2006 Skepticallity took a little break. I enjoy a very good beer from time to time but a 12 pack might last me 6 months. I really don't like what it does to me personally. It's the house I lived in when my memory fades into the foggy mist of very early childhood (I have fairly clear memories back to age 3 and a few dim memories from age 2.). I can clearly remember seeing, many, many times, a middle aged woman with long dark hair and darkish skin (like a Latina or southern European). Trouble was every time I saw her it was out of the corner of my eye or in the dark. Sometimes she startled me, (especially if I was out of bed when I wasn't supose to be) but she never scared me or caused me harm. I even got the impression she was watching over me sometimes. In the summer of 1978 my family moved into a brand new house (we were the first family to move in on the block) across town and I never saw her again.

When I was in high school I met a girl who happened to live in my old house. I asked her if she'd ever seen anything weird in the house and she told me she'd seen a ghost several times and described the woman.

For a long time I thought it WAS a ghost. Having lived through 3 republican and 2 democratic presidents in my post adolescences I've gotten a bit more skeptical in my old age ("read my lips, 'no new taxes'" yea right, just gona jack up the old ones hehe). I no longer believe that what I saw was a ghost. It's hard to believe though that a person I didn't know, who I'd never met, and never told about the ghost could describe it. I hadn't even thought of the "ghost" in many years, so had told no one else about it so I know it wasn't anyone playing a trick on me.

Can someone please tell me what I saw that does not include "paranormal" activity?

Weird Rocks

It's amazing how many rocks look like stuff. There is a bear drinking beer in Yosemite, a huge alligator in the Grand Canyon, a golf ball (about 6 feet tall sitting on a tee in Death Valley (very close to Devils Golf Course) I saw this stone dog on a cinder cone in California. It's amazing to think, we know most of these "natural sculptures" have nothing to do with intelligent designers yet we see something like the face on Mars and assume someone built it. When you consider some of the features of the face were not shadows but rather missing data, (which the computer fills in with a black pixel) the face looks a lot less like a face. Then again think of all the rocks that just look like blobs of rock.

It seems to me that many people would rather have a fantastic explanation for something rather than a mundane one, even if the mundane explanation is billions of times more likely.

A long time ago I saw a real UFO. My heart started beating fast. I'm very failure with how airplanes fly and I knew this flying object wasn't flying in a manner that is even possible for a plane. It was night and the thing had an incredibly bright light it was shining on the ground. It seemed to be looking for something. I became more and more excited as it got closer (and a little scared, what if it was looking for me!) then as it got close enough for me to hear it I heard the familiar and distictive "flap flap flap" of a......police helicopter!

Prophecy And Free Will Are Exclusive

Prophecy and free will are mutually exclusive. If you have free will every person who has ever lived, is living now, and will live in the future has very large effects on past and future history. Making prophecy quite impossible. Even God can not predict what will happen when everyone is free to chose their own path.

An example from history. The Battle of Midway, fought in 1942 was a huge victory for the United States Navy. The US sunk 4 main carriers and killed a large fraction of the JIN's trained pilots and air crews. (3 of them in less than 5 minutes) The reason the US attacks were so devastating was that the Japanese admirals had ordered a weapons change to attack the US fleet. The admirals knew they were safe from attack at that time because one of his spotter planes had seen the US fleet and he knew his fleet was out of range of the American planes. (The JIN planes had longer ranges). But the spotter had placed the fleet in the wrong position by a few hundred miles. In fact the JIN was in range of the American planes. Just as crews were changing weapons the American torpedo bombers showed up. These planes were no real threat to the JIN but they didn't know that. The protecting zeros dove down to attack the Americans and shot them all down. Just after the disastrous torpedo attack the dive bombers showed up and launched an attack. All the zeros were down low and unable to attack the dive bombers.

Had the Japanese scout been a little more careful with his navigation the victory could have gone to the Japanese.

Many things are not so obviuse. What if Adolf Hitler's parents decided not to have sex the night he was conceived? Or Jonis Sulk? Every person alive today is here because of specific pairings between beings going back billions of years all happening at just the right time. Just think of some of your closest friends you have. Would you have met them if you'd made different decisions? What if you'd decided not to stop for that cup of joe where you met your wife? Or suppose you had stopped at the store to get a cup of joe. You would not have met and been hit by the drunk driver that caused you to become paralized. Is this the "butterfly effect?"

Ok maybe everyone has a destiny and free will is an illusion. The Bible is full of descriptions of the punishment you will face for bad behavior. But if you can't control your behavior, because it's been preset is it fair to be punished for it?

The Bible says you will go to Hell forever if you are bad. But I find eternal punishment unjust, even for the worst possible behavior. I think we can all agree that Hitler was very bad indeed. But would he REALLY deserve to suffer FOREVER for what he did? Be honest now...He probably deserves to suffer a very long time, perhaps hundreds of billions of years but even a google years is less than forever. And if eternal suffering is unjust what happens after? Are you welcomed into Heaven. There are several million people who I'm sure would not be happy about sharing Heaven with Hitler. There is a way to resolve this problem. Heaven and Hell simply don't exist.

Is Esp Even Theoretically Possible

We know that the brain sends out weak signals while it's working because these signals can be measured by devices like EEGs and F-MRIs. If the brain sends out readable signals ESP may, theoretically be possible...But only if these signals are the same for everybody. Are they? I don't think it's very likely they are. Has anyone ever performed an experiment to test this? Is such an experiment possible? Perhaps we could put people into an F-MRI and ask them to think of something specific. But what happens when we think of something specific? Would my brain waves be different than Derricks when thinking about Swoopy? Probably. Derrick knows Swoopy and therefore thinks of her differently than I do. I think of Swoopy as a funny smart person with a nice voice who knows how to say "Oregon" properly. But that's about it. I don't even really know what she looks like! Derrick knows her as a friend and probably thinks of her very differently. Ok what about something not likely to illicet an emotional response, say a Chinese letter. But would Derrick and I see the letter in the same way?

If our brain waves differ then ESP would be quite impossible. There would be no way for my brain to "read" the signals coming from Derrick's brain.

The Rise Of Autism

I am autistic. All three of my sister's sons are also autistic (19, 7, 5). I've seen a lot on "the rise of autism" and a lot of alarmists wonding why it's rising so fast. I'd come to a conclusion and discussed it with my doctor, a wonderful smart lady who has two autistic children herself. I thought that the rise of autism could be directly blamed on one thing. A few years ago the medical community greatly widened what "autistic" means. This alone can explain the "rise" which means there is no rise at all. Rather all the kids being diagnosed as autistic now would have been missed before. My doctor agreed and she's really smart so maybe we are right.

I was not diagnosed as autistic (Aspergergers) until I was 35. this is a bit sad as I went through all of my childhood, and quite a lot of my adulthood thinking I was just a weirdo. Socially inept to heartbreaking perpotions. I'm working hard to overcome a lot of these deficits but I see how well my younger nephews are doing with proper teaching techniques and I'm really jealous of them. I love them to death, and I want them to do well but I wish I could have had the same thing.

I'm still new to the podcast. I'm working my way through and have gotten to "The Message" I was shocked and saddened to listen but I can see Derrick is still doing the show so I already know he survives....

I wonder if Derrick and Swoopy have covered Autism in the past or if not if they would be willing to cover the myth of the "rise of autism" on their program?

I'm new to the podcast. I'm working my way through and have gotten to the mirror mirror Whimsicality (8-29-05). Swoopy mentioned that the vanity mirrors in her car (still the Jetta?) had a warning not to use them while driving. If you actually NEED this warning, please3 please PLEASE do us all a huge favor. Call a friend and have them take you to a DMV. Doesn't have to be a local one. Please turn in your driver's license with the explanation that for medical reasons you can no longer safely drive. Because if you need this warning I really worry about what other things you might do while driving that most people would no better than to do.

Other warnings that make no sense to me:

Warning may cause drowsiness. On sleeping pills. Isn't that why I'm taking them. Tell you what. If they DON'T cause drowsiness can I have my money back?

Warning, for outdoor use only: On a box of fireworks...I mean come on!

Warning, use eye protection when using this tool: On a grinder. Have you ever used a grinder? (I'm a welder)

Warning use proper protection when using this tool. Do not look directly at arc without at least a number 10 shade lens. On an arc welder. Have you ever tried to watch an arc welder without shading your eyes? I guess if you're reading this you didn't look long.

For extenal use only: On a tube of muscle cream. Please if you dought me take a small amount and put it in your mouth. After the pain goes away enough that you can type please let us know what happened.

I just found the podcast and I'm getting a kick out of Swoopy I love her sense of humor. I'm listening to the casts from 2005 right now. So some of my questions and remarks might seem a bit antiquated.
I thought of a forum topic that might be fun. Maybe it's been tried, but it might be fun to have a "is it true?" subject, where members can put up a story then everyone will discuss if it's true or made up?
Personally I'm a bit skeptical that Swoopy is from Washington State. I'm in Portland Oregon (GO DUCKS) and find it hard to believe anyone who's from the PNW would move to the south east. But then she does pronounce "Oregon" correctly....

True Fortune Cookie

I just found Skepitaclity on the podcast and am listening to all the old ones to catch up. Please forgive the antiquity of this post.
In May 2005 Swoopy had a feature on fortune cookies that reminded me of something that happened to me that was a little creepy. I was working as a welder in Sparks, Nv and was assigned the task of building a stand for a new swamp cooler for the shop. I was very strongly motivated to get this job done as the swamp cooler was to be placed right at my work station! Daytime temperatures that time of year were above 100 every day!

Normally I work from blue prints but this was a one off job so I was in charge of it's design. This was not a problem as I've been trained to do this. I carefully took all the required measurements then proceeded to make a very stupid mistake. I built the stand with the outside dimensions where the inside dimensions should have been. Basically I forgot to take the metal thickness into account so the swamp cooler sat on, not in the stand. I didn't discover my error until we tried to set up the cooler so I had to cut the entire stand apart and start over from scratch. Not only had I wasted several hours but the company had to buy more steel. I was quite a bit more upset about this than my boss, who told me "Anyone who doesn't make a mistake is doing nothing worth while." This made me feel quite a lot better. It's nice to know you're not going to be fired for a big mistake like that.

That was a Friday. After work I had a date and we decided to go to P.F. Chang's in Reno. After dinner I opened my fortune cookie and saw, word for word, what my boss had told me earlier. It was creepy but considering all the fortune cookies eaten every day something like this is bound to happen simply by chance.

Absinthe. The very name of this anise-flavored spirit has become synonymous with the forbidden. Associated with marijuana and other illicit drugs, it is said to cause hallucinatory and psychoactive secondary effects, delusions, criminal tendencies, convulsions, tuberculosis and death.

At the start of the 20th century, these beliefs were reported by the media, widely promoted by the French wine industry, and spread via propaganda posters. This led to a ban on absinthe in Europe and the United States (lasting nearly 100 years).

This week on Skepticality, Swoopy talks with Cheryl Lins, owner of Delaware Phoenix Distilleries in Walton, New York, about how this once-accepted and popular drink came to be outlawed and misunderstood â and how it was eventually resurrected at the hands of skeptics and scientists.

Insulting Religious Beliefs.

As I mentioned in a couple of posts (answering to AH), I have a number of Christian friends. In fact, the majority of my friends and acquaintances have varying degrees of beliefs, with atheists and agnostics making up a very small number of the already small number of people I count as friends.

I got to thinking they (the people who hold some belief in a given religion) might be appalled to read some of my recent posts in the discussion stemming from the bigoted and hate-filled posts of one Angry Hawk, a coward whose own convictions and religion appear not strong enough to warrant using his own name. Then again, he himself is likely ashamed of what he writes, and does not want it getting back to anyone he knows.

But, to get back to my friends . . . like I said, they might be shocked reading my posts about god being called a bitch, jc being called the perforated one, and the holy smoke being derided in a number of ways. Certainly I would never speak to them in such a way . . . unless they spewed as much hatred as the AH does.

I do have respect for other people beliefs when those beliefs are used to shore up one's own life and outlook of the world, or used to help them pass through this most difficult of journeys we call life.

I lose all respect when those beliefs are used to do real harm to the lives of others. I don't mind someone not believing in gay marriage, but to actively work against it crosses a line, and that kind of activism immediately invalidates any bond of friendship I might have had with that person. One can believe whatever one wants, but actions are a different matter; people should be accountable for all they do that affects others.

And such is the case with AH; whatever god he believes in is tainted by Angry Hawk's own venomous words. That god, that god's supposed words, and everything associated with it instantly turns to crap in my book. A book I'll put up against their book any day, and any time.

If my friends read these posts, and if they are offended, then I challenge them to come forth and mind one of their own kind. If "good" christians policed this kind of festering pus-filled mind, I would not feel compelled to voice my disdain, my disgust, and my utter lack of respect for the likes of Angry hawk. Even if one christian came forth it would provide me a sliver of hope theirs is not a totally worthless religion.

But that's just it . . . I've never heard any christian I know speak against what another christian is doing, or condemning their actions, or even arguing with them. No christian came on this board, and I'm assuming some might be reading these posts, to raise their voice and speak against what is obviously a demented follower of their faith. And maybe that is just it; they dismiss his rants as an abomination, a freak borne out of a tainted understanding of the message of their religion.

Regardless the reason, the lack of any opposing voices to these attacks on basic human rights taints them with the same stink clinging to everything Angry Hawk says. Every one of AH's hateful word left unchallenged by his fellow christians paints all of christianity the the stench of intolerance, ignorance, and hatefulness.

And it's not just here. It's in churches, on TV shows, in books, and in casual conversation. As a group christians bear the responsibility to police their own, and failure to do so makes them equivalent in my eyes to the poor excuse for a human being now infesting this board.

Sadly, christians are not unique in this behavior. Adherents to all religions show the same closing of ranks, reluctant to criticize even the most demented of believers . . . all the while being willing an eager to questions the motives, honesty, and character of those who dare utter even one word questioning their precious beliefs.

Precisely for this I will go to my grave with total lack of respect for all religions; I'll abide personal beliefs of individuals, but as a group I am disgusted by the lot of them.

Yesterday a mad military psychiatrist committed masacre in Fort.Hood,Texas.Yes it is a horrible tragedy and I feel pain for the families of the killed. Why things like that happen. We got shootings at Columbine,VT University, shoping mall, plus other manmade and natural tragedies as hurricane Katrina that are happening in large dozes nowadays. Why?America forsaken God!We turned to demonic secular humanism, abortion, fag agenda, rebelling youth, porn, and other perversions.
Here what is the result.Last mounth this Obama signed the unconstitutional Matthew Shepard Act in order to muzzle Christians and other moral Americans who speak the truth about fags.Yesterday in Texas Fort Hood we payed the consequenses.

Is Glbt Agenda A Good Cause?

Today the high winds of GLBT equality agenda are blowing nationwide throughout America. The four states legalized same-sex marriages and now have GLBT couples getting married legally. The so-called civil rights movements started equating homosexuals with racial minorities and claim that gays are oppressed as same as African Americans were before the 60s.Even some churches went radical ways by allowing the acceptance of GLBT and even accept gay priests and members into their congregations.Let us forget what the civil rights advocates, politicians, judges, and radical clergy do regarding GLBT.Let us look at reality what God says regarding gays.
Homosexuality is desribed in The Bible as the filthy abomination against Lord Our God.Leviticus 18:22 and Romans 1:26-32.God punishes strictly those who dare to indulge into gay life and He deals angry with the wicked including sodomites.Psalm 7:11.Gays are described in KJV Bible as Natural Brute Beasts who are filled with demons and live on their reprobate minds.Any nation that legalizes same-sex equality will be doomed as Sodom and Gomorrah did in Genesis 19:1-29.America is doomed and there no refute, because she turned away from God,accepted abortions, and now is giving way to gays.Yes,it is not wrong to say that God hates fags and their enablers. That what we must deal with.

Cryptozoological creatures like Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster and the Chupacabra have fascinated and inspired monster hunters for generations, providing endless reports of sightings, unverified film footage and blurry photographs to feed the public imagination.

Thankfully, this kind of speculation and storytelling has also given rise to a new generation of skeptical investigators who use the tools of science to dig into monster claims. This week on Skepticality, Derek & Swoopy talk with Benjamin Radford, Dr. Karen Stollznow, and Blake Smith â the team from the podcast MonsterTalk.

View the full article
