The Archeoraptor scandal began with a press conference on October 15, 1999.
- The Cardiff Giant was uncovered on October 16, 1869.  An artist in Syracuse, NY has created a replica that will be unearthed this weekend on the 142nd birthday of the hoax.
Harold Camping predicted the world will end a week from Friday on October 21, 2011.  Camping shared the 2011 Ig Nobel Prize for Mathematics this year for his predictions. 
- A previous noted religious prediction of armageddon became known as the Great Disappointment on October 22, 1844.  Failed predictions like this directly led to the theory of cognitive dissonance.
Robert Gimlin was born October 18, 1931.
